Boardwalk Empire Haircut

Boardwalk Empire is pushing the 1930 fashions upon us.  Barber shops all over the West Village are getting requests for the Micky Doyle.  The style consists of shaved sides, long on top with good amount of pomade to slick it back.  The old school hair-do has been a hit for web designers, young banker, djs, and even fashion designers.  Wear it right and your on the cutting edge, wear it wrong and you look like you've signed up for the Hitler's youth club.

Breaking Dawn Hair Stylist give tips for Brunette Hair

US weekly interviewed celebrity hair stylist Jennifer J and asked her how she takes care of Kristen Stewarts hair on the set of Breaking Dawn, Twilight series.  She has good tips those wanting to create the same rich dark tones.

Q: What maintenance and care tips should I follow to keep my color rich and glossy?
A: First, you should definitely use shampoo and conditioner especially for color treated hair, preferably sulfate free. A gloss treatment is key for deep shine and richness. Deep conditioning is a must for smooth and frizz-free hair and a shine spray will add extra shine after styling.
Q: What went into perfecting Bella Swan's hair color and how can I recreate it?
A: In doing Kristen's color for Bella Swan, there was a lot of layering in color involved. Kristen definitely has warm tones in her hair and if you wanted to achieve this look, you would need to end up with a chocolate brown base color with warm, amber and auburn brown-toned ends. This is all done by layering semi-permanent color and glosses.

Q: Whoops! My end hair color is super dark and isn't the shade I was aiming for! How can I fix it?
A: If it turned out too dark, using a clarifying shampoo or Head & Shoulders will lift the color out a little bit. Also, if you put a deep conditioner or an oil treatment in your hair and cover your hair with a shower cap and a hot towel from the dryer, it will also help pull the color out of your hair, but in a more gentle way. If you did make a more extreme mistake, you should definitely see a colorist that specializes in color corrections. Typically you can color your hair again right away, but I would not recommend doing this yourself -- you should really get an expert's advice!

Mitt Romney's Presidential Hair

Is Mitt's hair too perfect?  If you were going to style this man's hair would you change it.
Well his stylist would.   Leon De Magistris, Mitt's stylist said that for years, he has tried to persuade Romney, 64, to loosen up his look by tousling his meticulous mane.
“I will tell him to mess it up a little bit,” said De Magistris, 69. “I said to him, ‘Let it be more natural.’”
The suggestion has not gone over well.
“He wants a look that is very controlled,” De Magistris said. “He is a very controlled man. The hair goes with the man.”
Romney’s is a restrained, classic look: short at the neck, neat on the sides and swept back off the forehead. “It is not something stylish,” De Magistris noted. “It is clean and conservative.”
The cut is so recognizable that men in this well-heeled suburb of Boston ask for it by name.
“The Mitt,” they whisper to De Magistris from the red vinyl chairs in his upscale salon, Leon & Co., a few blocks from the sprawling home where Romney raised his family.
De Magistris, who gave Romney a $70 trim three weeks ago, agreed to share some of the secrets behind his most famous client’s coiffure in between haircuts the other day.
No, he said, Romney does not color his hair. Any such artificial enhancement, De Magistris said, “is not — what do you call it? — in his DNA.”
Despite holding its shape under all but the most extreme conditions, it is gel and mousse-free. “I don’t put any product in there,” he avowed.  So add "The Mitt" to your salon menu.  Offer it to all of your controlled, well heeled business men.

Magnetic Polish

Crackle is dead.
I know it is no surprise to anyone that the craze for has died an abrupt death. Everyone finally has inventory to sell of the product and now no one wants it. So what is next? Magnetic polish. The polish has metal dust that rises to the top when you hover a magnet over your nail before the polish drys. It creates a 3D ripple effect. It is quite cool with certain colors. Watch the video for a demonstration. I have heard from many manufacturers working on putting out their own version before the end of the year. There is about an extra 10 minutes involved with the application compared to your typical manicure. Is it the next big thing? ..........I think it is.

Gelac being discontinued by IBD?

There is a rumor in the nail tech world that one of the main players in the soak off gel category has fallen.
IBD is telling customers that the Gelac, soak off polish is discontinued.  I have heard over and over that the product was curing in the bottle even before it was opened.  They needed to change the formula or the bottle to correct the problem.  IBD is saying that they will have a new product for this hot category called "JustGel"  The new product will be cured under UV and LED lights.

Maintain those shears!

Sure Sam is pimping his products, but he's right about keeping the tools of your trade in good condition.

I got my hair cut a few months ago from a barber that had the squeakest shears I have ever heard.  I asked if he thought he needed a new pair and he said "No I love these shears!"  Mean while it was like nails on a chalk board in my ears as he cut my hair.  The hair cut turned out fine and I gave him my friend Kevin from Professional Products and More and told him to get those things an oil change.  You spend a lot of money on shears, keep them in good working order.  Have a great day! Cut, Color, Create.

The Fabulous French Braid

 Tress the Halls with Braids

September, 2011 (Bethlehem, PA) – The braid craze continues with hipsters looking relaxed and Bohemian-like with a little sum sum to make them stand out.  The trick to adopting the look is confidence and a quick recall of those French braiding days at camp.  Krista Beahm, cool camper and stylist at patrick mcivor color studio, refreshes the glory days in preparation for the holidays.

“The holidays are crazy enough without having to stress about your hair.  I keep it simple with my clients, with a basic understanding of braiding, anyone can look hip this holiday,” explains Beahm.

Simple French Braid
·         Separate a small section of hair where you want the braid to start and apply Matrix Design Pulse Loosely Defined Texture Crème for natural hold.
·         Separate the section into 3 sections (make sure they are even).
·         Cross the section on the right over the middle.
·         Add some hair to the far right side (thin section about the same size as the very first section).
·         Cross the far left section over the middle.
·         Add some hair to the far left side (same amount of hair as added to the right side).
·         Repeat the process until you run out of hair to add and then either continue the braid until there is no more hair left or secure at the end of the French braid with an elastic.

“Once the braid is mastered, you can use it as the foundation of the style and personalize it by doing different things like curling the rest of the hair, straightening the rest, adding a messy side bun or a textured ponytail,” adds Beahm.

Rooster Feathers, Oil, Gas and Gold Prices on the Rise

The Dow Jones Industrial average was down 180 points today.  Stocks were having a bad day but oil, gold, gas, and feathers were climbing to new heights.
Rooster feathers are in high demand by the fashion world, but have the fly fisherman calling fowl.  Peta is getting into the fray as the rooster population is decimated for hair stylists embellishing  their clients tresses.  Fly fishermen are now standing on the sides of streams with the fish laughing at their empty hooks.

The feathers are not easy to come by these days. They come from roosters that are genetically bred and raised for their plumage. In most cases, the birds do not survive the plucking.
At Whiting farm in western Colorado, one of the world’s largest producers of fly-tying feathers, the roosters live about a year while their saddle feathers - the ones on the bird’s backside and the most popular for hair extensions - grow as long as possible. Then the animal is euthanized.  As hair extensions, the feathers can be brushed, blow-dried, straightened and curled once they are snapped into place. Most salons sell the feather strands for $10 to $20 a piece. The trend has become so popular a company online even sells feather extensions for dogs.
The craze has also left hairstylists scrambling to find rooster saddle feathers, as fly shops hold onto a select few for their regular customers. The businesses will now ask if the feathers are for hairdressing, said Shelly Ambroz, who owns MiraBella Salon and Spa in Boise.  “If you go in, and you’re a woman, they won’t sell to you,” said Mrs Ambroz, who started to eye her husband’s fly-fishing gear after stores ran out.
“He told me to stay out of his feathers,” she said.

OPI rumor the street

There is a rumor on the street about a new professional OPI product.  The nail distributors are saving their pennies for a big OPI buy in.  Axxium, OPI's soak off gel product that comes in a pot will now have a polish bottle companion.  Shellac, CND's line of soak off gel made polish bottle gels the rage last year.  Many new brands have popped up capitalizing on the idea.  Shellac always suffered from lack of product and color choices.  It's a crowded market, but hell its OPI.  My prediction is great marketing, and colors from OPI then shortages just like what happened with "Shatter"  The price of the bottle will be about $18, but don't forget you need your base, top coat and UV light if you don't have one.

Could this dryer be off the set of Mad Men?

If vintage is in, you need to find these state of the art 1960s hair dryers for your salon.  I stayed in a hotel in Burbank this week that featured these in all their rooms.  The hotel was the Golden Key which was aesthetically out of place being surrounded by a gorgeous mall and apartments.   The dryers are wired so that when you pick up the handle they power up,so no need for those pesky button that control the temperature or power.  Cold shot?  Who needs one.  Stylist be warned, the hose heats up quickly and you will be covered in burn marks by the end of day.  Can you get one from CHI you ask.  I'm texting Farouk now.

Hair trends from matrix stylist!

Patrick McIvor, Matrix artistic director and owner of patrick mcivor color studio, expects to see a shift to high-impact, low maintenance haircolor for fall/winter 2011/12.

“People live at such a high speed these days, so providing colors that have an attractive balance between time for the color application and frequency of maintenance will be key factors in the colors women want for fall.  Today, there has to be a two week grace period in refreshing color, women want and need more options for service times and frequency, and they still want impactful color,” explains McIvor.

Thanks to many like Emma Watson and Michelle Williams, hair is getting shorter.  And with shorter hair comes more risk, so high impact colors, unnatural accents and strategically placed statement colors will be popular on all hair lengths.  Think ends lights, underlying colors, defused color placement, mini-lifts and demi-permanent color panels.  Even temporary color accents with feathers and wefts will be in style.

Hot Fall Colors

Blondes: More glamorous, no longer just a head of highlights – return of blonde on blonde and double process blondes (Reece Witherspoon, Michelle Williams, Lady Gaga).

Brunette: Move from dark and solid to dark with texture (Kate Middleton, Rachel Bilson, Olivia Wilde, Selena Gomez).

Red: The hot new it color due to fade-proof reds with new advances in technology in professional colors like Matrix Color Sync (crème demi-color) and SOCOLOR (permanent cream) formulated with HD (high def) Color Technology Red/Copper for longer lasting, more vibrant reds and coppers.  (Ariana Grande, Rihanna, JoAnna Garcia, Drew Barrymore, Scarlet Johansson).

Kate middleton Royal Wedding Hairdo

Kate Middleton had a wonderful wedding day.  The sky cleared, the crowd roared and the second kiss was magical.  Not loving her wedding hair though.  It was a little too simple for me.  I was expecting princess hair!  A few tight curls, and swept off her face was too common.  I saw no glamor, no royal pizazz.  I guess I was expecting more.  Well, her sister and Harry are rumored to be hitting it off well, maybe another royal wedding is in the works.

Kate Middleton's Royal Wedding Hair Style

April 29th is rapidly approaching for James Pryce and Kate Middleton.  Who do you think is more nervous, the bride or the hair stylist?  We have been told that Kate will not be wearing a traditional wedding updo, rather her beautiful long brown hair will be 100 percent down and flowy.  There will be a team of six stylist on hand to ensure a perfect, on time and sure to be amazing hair style.  The team will also be doing the hair for the maid of honor and the bride's mother.  The preparations are going to take place near Buckingham Palace at the Goring Hotel.  Kate's hair is sure to be fantastic, my question is who is going to do William's hair that day.  He has lost most of what was on top, so should it be close cropped.  He should definite not keep it as is.  A number of shakes from a bottle of Xfusion and he could look 5 years younger.

Hair Cut Fight!

Oh no you didn't just get your hair cut by my momma!
Watch out because even your mom can steal you clients.  Maybe this is what happened in Hickory NC when two women got into a fight over a haircut.
Channel 9's newspaper partner, The Hickory Daily Record, reported the fight followed an argument between two women Wednesday.Hickory Police Sgt. Phil Demas said 24-year-old Natasha Scott was upset that 21-year-old Kiara Shuford got a haircut from Scott's mother.Demas said the younger women fought in the parking lot at Civitan Court on 17th Avenue, NE, and Scott's mother joined the struggle.  Forty-five-year-old Teresa Jean Imes is charged with assault with a deadly weapon after both Shuford and Scott suffered cuts. The women were treated at a local hospital.

Sam Villa Wins Behind the Chair Award

Sam Villa has won the Stylist Choice Award for favorite educator and platform artist from Behind the Chair.
This is his second win for this award.  He has been the front man for Redkin 5th Avenue for 15 years.  The Stylist Choice Awards were given out at the American Beauty Show in Chicago.  Why do stylist love Sam?
Just listen to this quote from his acceptance speech;

“After my father brought me to my first hair show, I dreamed of becoming a platform artist - thanks dad!   Winning this award, especially in the company of such incredible talent, is truly a dream come true.  I will continue to teach, motivated by passion, for it is passion that feeds my dreams and makes them come true. Passion is the spark that ignites self-motivation and it starts with examining our purpose within our job. We are all blessed with gifts; these gifts need to be shared. Passionate belief in your dreams and goals is the only fuel that will get us over, around or through the many obstacles we encounter as hairdressers. We won’t achieve it unless we continue to be passionate about it. The most important ingredient of passion is love, the love of this industry, the love of the art, and I applaud all you artists out there! Thank You,”

What a winning attitude and a credit to our industry.
Congratulation Sam!

Lady Ga Ga Style tips

Well if all the teenagers and tweens take beauty and style tips from Lady Ga Ga we will have a great decade of fix-it business.  How many $10 hair cuts and a home color jobs have you had to fix over the years.   Well get ready for the boon!  People magazine asked Ga Ga about her beauty regiment and you'll be shocked to hear the details.  I have a new advertising campaign for any salon, "We can fix your Ga Ga Hair, We can fix your Ga Ga skin."  Here is part of the interview,

Lady Gaga revealed her beauty regimen to People magazine and it's surprisingly low maintenance for someone who regularly steps out wearing facial horns.
A young Gaga was taught by her mother to wash her face with only Ivory soap, however she confessed that she goes to bed every night with makeup on her face ("That is not good for your skin, but I'm blessed with good genes") -- answering our question of how she gets that junk off...she doesn't! Glad that's cleared up.
And on the topic of her locks, the brunette-turned-bleach-blonde said she periodically has to "get a chemical haircut because my blonde hair is falling out." Oh, Gags. Perhaps it's time to go a little au naturale?

Jennifer Aniston Gets a bob

The "Rachel" is out, the "bob" is in.  Jennifer Aniston has cut off
her long tresses and is showing off her new sexy bob.  Her celebrity stylist, Chris McMillan said that it was time for a change.  “The reason that I’m loving a bob at the moment… There are so many long, layered hairstyles and—don’t get me wrong, I love that. But The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills all have that. You know what I mean? And what’s the opposite direction you can go in.” says McMillan.  Will the new do have the same effect as the old Rachel cut?  We will know soon.  Be prepared for your clients to come in holding the latest magazine cover with Aniston on the front telling you - "Do this to my hair!"

OPI Shatter Shatters Sales Expections

The Katy Perry polish collection featuring the black shatter polish has become the hottest product in the nail market.  It has been very difficult to find in both brick n mortar, and online.  I was in a distributor's warehouse a month ago and saw 3 pallets of it come in, three weeks later he was out of stock.  OPI under produced their hot new product and the next wave of deliveries is not until the end of March.  If you have it, rock it, if not, try ebay.
Here is a video of how it works.

Jusin Beiber Bald!

Its what all the cool kids are doing these days.
Justin Beiber was on Jimmy Kimmel and the talk show host convinced the singer to let him shave his head.
After the commercial break fans were teased by seeing the young star with a bald head (wearing a bald cap)

"I like it!" Jimmy commented on Justin's new look and the singer agreed with a bit hesitance, "I kind of like it, too." Asked how he thinks girls will react about his bald head, Justin said, "Yeah it's great, [the girls] will just focus on my beautiful silky smooth lyrics. I think the girls will be upset about it, but you know what, they'll get over it."

Also on the show, Justin revealed his plans for Valentine's Day. He named his Mom, instead of his rumored lover Selina Gomez, as his Valentine's date and said he would "go to a random theater that's playing [his] movie "Never say never" and surprise the audience.

Feather your nest

Okay, its official, we have a hot new trend.  I was at the ISSE show in Long Beach last week looking for new products and I noticed one in every ten women had a feather braid in their hair.  These feathers are installed similar to extensions.  They looked so cool in their hair.  Feather Heads was the stand out product in the category.  I also saw hair tinsel that was just as fab, adding colored bling to your hair.  I predict that this summer is going to be awash with these extension accessories.  They will be a great small add on service for any stylist to follow this quick trend.

Waxing Poetic How to Succed in a Down Market

How is your waxing business?  Do you have a waxing business?  Well why not?  There is more to life than plucking or shaving at home.  I found this great article about New York waxing bar that is using some great marketing to create business.  Here is the link to the article New York Times "Where wax is queen"

The Boom Boom Brow Bar was opened in 2008 by Malynda Vigliotti in the middle of our financial crisis.
She realized that to set herself apart she was going to need clever marketing.  She quickly came up with her first discount slogan "The Bare Sterns" bikini wax down from $49 to $30.
That kind of humor and wit has set her apart from the crowd.  She still holds great discounts in her west village shop and will have customers standing in line out front of the 250 square foot space.   Its a great article so give it a read.

Paris Hilton couter sues over wearing someone else hair

If you remember that a while back we blogged that Paris Hilton was being sued by Hairtech for breach of contract, well we have a update for you.  Paris is now counter suing the company for 2.1 million in damages and 400,000 in attorney fees, plus 500,000 in declaratory relief.  Paris claims the company failed to pay her 1.7 million and that they secretly altered documents with her signature.  Along with counter suing the hair extension company, Paris denies she was unprofessional and claims the company's CEO Chris Volek wrote her an email praising her performance after she filmed a commercial for the company. According to gossip website TMZ, the email said "Hey Paris. I know it was a long day, but baby you 'Rocked.' Just from the takes I saw this is going to be one hellava commercial, you were genuinely amazing."  All this because she was seen wearing a competitor's hair piece which was probably used by her stylist, was unable to attend a Hairtech event because she was arrested for something or other.
Geez, you did hire Paris Hilton right?  What did they expect?

Tiger Woods bogies his way into the beauty business?

Well not exactly.  Tiger's one time mistress Loredana Jolie is opening up a beauty salon in New York.  The former Playboy playmate has written a tell all book and will now own a salon in a neighborhood on the upper east side called .....wait for it....Tigress.  Women will probably come from miles around to have their mane coiffed in Loredana's salon.  Hopefully patrons will get a glimpse of the beauty putt ering  around the shop.
