A barber shop in suburban Atlanta is offering parents a new approach to disciplining kids who misbehave. It's a hair-raising tactic for the youngsters, and it's getting mixed reviews from grown-ups, CBS News' David Begnaud reports.
At A-1 Kutz in Snellville, Georgia, the newest cut is the least popular look. Owner Russell Frederick named the new do.
"I called it the 'grown up kids special' for all the kids who want to act as if they're grown, so I took it upon myself to make you look grown," Frederick said.
You can't find a kid in the salon who likes it.
"It actually shows you how to behave, so I would agree with it, but at the same time, I wouldn't want my hair to be cut off," said 13-year-old Khalil Bennet.
It's called a special because it's meant to punish problem kids by making them look like old men. It's also free.

Hot New Years Eve Hair Style

So you've got the dress, you've got the hot date, but now what to do with your hair?
Below is a great style for your New Years Eve party.  The side swept bun is a great
classy style for a dress up event.  Check out the photo and instruction from 17 magazine.

Separate a 3” section of hair at the front, then pull the rest into a low side ponytail. Twist and pin small pieces of the pony to create a pretty bun. Then, loosely drape the front section to frame your face, and pin into the bun.

Here is a great how too for that not so perfect but totally fashionable Messy bun.
Messy Bun How To
·       Create two small topknots on top of the head
·       Apply a playable texture cream or paste and rough up the hair with a brush to create a more lived in feel
·       Take one of the topknots and split it in two (as if tying a knot) and randomly pin the left over ends to the other side
·       Repeat with the second top knot
·       Leave loose pieces around the hairline and apply a texture creme for polished texture finish

It was a fantastic event this year at the American Beauty Show in the heart of Chicago.
I was there supporting the fast growing Bosley Professional line.  We had a moment of high emotion when we applied our new hair fibers to a young lady suffering from thinning hair on her crown.  She was brought to tears when she realized she could confidently cover this area up while she worked on regrowing her lost hair.  It is one of those times when you see how important our industry is to the public.
I was afraid as always of flying my warm climate bottom to the Midwest in early March, but
this crowd was unafraid of the harsh Chicago weather blowing off Lake Michigan.  They were there for education, to see new products and shop all the great deals.  The Behind the Chair stylist choice awards was better then ever this year with an all star cast of your favorite platform artist and educators.  Once again the hottest trend were the ghetto glam nail styles I was seeing in the crowd and in the booths.  I hope you get to go one of these fantastic shows!

  

OPI joins the matte nail polish trend

Matte nail polish has been growing in popularity over the past 6 months.  There have been many brands relaunching age old matte topcoats and showcasing their new matte color collections.  But now the largest nail polish line has introduced their own matte topcoat shown here.

With OPI's marking muscle this trend should be in constant demand all spring.  The matte look works well with the spring colors but I predict that neons are going to be bigger then ever this summer.
Don't throw away your high gloss topcoat just yet, because you can't not work neon brights with the dulling matte coating.

ISSE Hotness Long Beach Hair Show

It was a great time this year at ISSE in Long Beach Ca.  The sun was shinning, the hair styles were hot, and the nails were smokin!  Noticeably missing (thankfully) was hair feathers, flairs, and bling.  The bling has transitioned from being on your head to on your nails.  Nail art was HUGE this weekend at ISSE.  What was also huge was the new Instyler IQ.  Celebrity stylist Dean Banowetz was on hand to show off the powerful new salon tools.  Next up is the March, Chicago show.  I'll let you know if these new trends can ease the chill of the windy city.

 Ted Gibson explains: "To achieve this look, prep the hair with build it blow drying agent, then twist random sections of hair while blow-drying to create texture. Next, run tame it shine lotion throughout, then pull hair back loosely into a high pony. Take hair and twist until it coils, then wrap it around itself to form bun. Secure the bun with pins. Next, gently pull out pieces from the bottom of the bun and spritz with Ted Gibson beautiful hold hairspray to create an elegant, yet effortless Upswept Bun.”

Amika had a Holiday Hair Event in San Diego on Monday for the local distributor Spectrum salon services.  I was a great event that featured their unique clip free curlers.  The New York based company features professional tools with fashionable patterns and prints.  They also have a wonderful

The coolest thing I found with the item was the smart motor hidden inside. It was scary how it could almost read my mind. I was told that it is the same tech that goes into a segway (the crazy two wheel motoring device that the hipsters in San Francisco love.) CVS closes all of its 360 beauty supply stores

 Small business and big business seem to be succumbing to the effects of this economy.  Retail stores have been suffering for quite some time now.  Our industry, based on a needed service has weathered much better then others.  CVS, though is unable to translate their marketing muscle and buying power into a successful beauty supply business.  The CVS Caremark Corp has officially shut down as of May 19th.  Those of us that are still alive and kicking know what a struggle it can be.  If you love the industry and what you do though, you will be successful.  Thankfully, the service end of our industry still thrives and if paired with great products so can the retail. 

George Clooney never to have gray hair again?

 Would you want to change his look?  Does George Clooney need to get rid of the gray hair? Gray hair could be cured once and for all. Science has just broke the secret code to stop hair from going gray.

Gray hair is, along with premature balding, one of the greatest fears of image-conscious men and women everywhere, but it may soon be a thing of the past. Scientists at the Ito Lab at New York University's Langone Medical Center have identified the proteins that cause gray hair, which could lead to an eventual cure.
Scientists have known for years that hair color is determined by the stem cells that guide the development of hair follicles working together with color-producing stem cells called melanocytes. Today, NYU researchers announced they had isolated the wnt protein, which serves to coordinate pigmentation between the two types of stem cells.
Already, scientists have managed to start with black mice and once they inhibited the Wnt pathway in their melanocyte stem cells, they eventually turned gray.

"Mouse and the human hairs are very similar in the way that they are structured and the way they contain melanocyte stem cells. We found that the wnt signaling pathway is activated the same way," said Piul Rabbani, a grad student in NYU's Langone Medical Center who led the study, told ABC News.
This breakthrough means that one day the wnt protein could be added to hair grooming products or supplements and help turn back the clock.
"Our hair follicles and the pigmentation from the melanocyte stem cells work in a very similar fashion, so it definitely can be applied at some point in the future," Rabbani told ABC News.
